5 Ways to Prep for Your Newborn Session | Newborn

As a mama, you can do all the things to prep for your newborn session, and still be thrown a curve ball. We recently had our newborn pictures taken for Baby Boy #3, and even I had a few bumps in the road. I even wore baby boy while I did my hair and makeup so I could be ready beforehand. Yes, you read that right! My favorite wrap saved the day! I thought I had a plan for swapping out our bedding, but nope it didn’t go as I had hoped.

But guess what it’s okay! I tried to stay calm and not stress about it. I knew it wasn’t something I could change, so I made do. I changed my vision, and it all worked out!

Mama, the more you stress, the more stressed your baby and family are too!

Here are 5 tips to prep for your newborn session:

  1. PICK YOUR OUTFITS OUT BEFOREHAND

Plan ahead. Go shopping and pick out your outfits beforehand. Make sure you try them on and lay them out to see how it all looks together. YOU are the most important one that day. Make sure you feel comfortable in whatever you choose to wear!

2. ASK FOR HELP

It is okay to ask for help. Have a friend or family member come over to hold your new little one or help with the big kids so you have time to get ready without feeling rushed. Take some pressure off yourself.

3. MAKE SURE YOU PULL OUT THE IRON FOR BEDDING AND OUTFITS

Iron all the things. Does your bedding need to have a wrinkle or two ironed out? This is really if you decide to put something new on. You see I was going to put a new duvet cover on and opened it up the day of. It had an orange string through the trim, and I realized if I was going to use it, it would need to be ironed. All that to say, you do NOT need to purchase new bedding for your newborn session we will be using it in our bedroom once I get a new one.

4. FEED YOUR BABY 30 MINUTES BEFORE

Make sure your baby is well fed. It is a good idea to feed your little one about 30 minutes before your session then allow mama to put her clothes on and finish any last minute touch ups.

5. TAKE A DEEP BREATH, AND RELAX

Lastly, take a deep breath and relax. Yes, easier said than done. Your energy feeds to your baby and family. If you are relaxed, everyone else will be too.

What if my home doesn’t have good natural light? | Dallas, TX Newborn Photography

What if my home doesn’t have good natural light? Yes, I get this question often, but you would be surprised. Most homes have great natural light in at least one or two rooms during a portion of the day.

One tip I like to share with my clients that may be concerned. On a day when the sun is shining, turn all your overhead lights and lamps off. See how each room changes lighting throughout the day. Some rooms get better morning light while others get better afternoon light. All you need is one room to have natural light pouring in when the blinds and curtains are open!

As a natural light photographer, I tend to always use the natural light of your home during our session. This is why many times you will see me reschedule if it is forecast to be overcast and rainy. I also tend to schedule your newborn session during the hours of 9am-4pm when the sun is the strongest.

When I arrive, I will ask for you to show me your home, walk me around, and allow me to view the lighting in each room. This will help me to determine our best location or two for your session. Yes, I will turn off any lights that may be on or pull a curtain open just a bit more. We want as much light flowing it as possible.

If you worry about your home’s natural light, you are always welcome to take pictures of your rooms and send them too me. We can also determine when lighting is best as I review your images prior to your session!

Busy season is upon us. What does this mean?

Well, September, October and November tend to be the busiest season for photographers.

My schedule is filled with those precious newborns (as always) plus mini sessions, extra family sessions and then your typical editing and office work (invoicing, contracts, emails, you name it!). The late nights (or in my case) early mornings to take care of all the things!

This season can be overwhelming at times, but what a JOY! I love the craziness as we prepare for the holidays.

In the midst of it all, it is so important to take care of yourself, focus on your family and not overdue it! This year I have been more intentional about my family time on the weekends. Stepping away from my computer during the day and soaking up the Fall fun with our little boys. Playing fireman, going on walks, carving pumpkins and pretend camping!

As we round out October, September and October have been two of my busiest months, and I am still setting goals, planning for 2021 and looking forward to adding some new things to my offerings!

The past few years have been years of learning, growth, adjusting to becoming a mom of 1 and now 2, all while working full-time, being a wife, mom, daughter, and friend. Some days I wonder what I am doing, but it’s those sweet emails, compliments and the joy that an image can bring to my clients that reassure me I am doing what the Lord has called me to do.

Send your photographer friends a little thank you, coffee, sweet note of encouragement or just let them know you appreciate them! A little can go a long way. We all need it during this season!
